E15 basics

What is the ethanol content?

E15 is a blend of ethanol with a minimum ethanol content of 10.5% ethanol and a maximum of 15% ethanol. The remainder is typically gasoline.

What vehicles can use E15?

It is approved by EPA for most vehicles. Specifically, 2001 and newer light duty vehicles and all Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs).

Was E15 tested before it was approved?

Yes, in fact, it is the most tested fuel in history. The U.S. Dept of Energy tested 86 vehicles more than 6 million miles before approving E15. CARB has since done their own testing and since its debut in July 2012 and consumers have logged more than 160 billion miles.

How do E15 emissions compare to E10?

According to University of California at Riverside:

• Particulate Matter reductions of 18 percent

• Hydrocarbon gas emissions reductions of 5 to 8 percent

• Carbon Monoxide reductions of 17 percent

• Nitrogen Oxide reductions of 3 percent

What is the value proposition to consumers?

More octane at a lower price while reducing emissions.
